Corporate Volunteering for Homelessness Week

Did you know that in Australia there are over 120,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given night?  Did you also know homelessness does not necessarily mean ‘rooflessness’?

This week is Homelessness Week (7 – 13 August, 2023). Hosted annually by Homelessness Australia, Homelessness Week aims to raise awareness of the impact of homelessness, and the solutions needed to end homelessness. The theme for 2023 is “It’s time to end homelessness”.

In the lead up to Homelessness Week, the Horner team had the privilege to don an apron and help out serving meals at the Magpie Nest Café in Melbourne as part of our Giving Back to the Community Program.

Part of The Salvation Army Melbourne Project 614, the Magpie Nest Café is a welcoming community café providing free breakfast and lunch, as well as support to people from all walks of life, especially those living on the margins of society.

We are in awe and applaud the amazing work the dedicated team at the Salvo’s team does, every day making a genuine difference to people’s lives. Our hats go off to Michael, Jessie and front of house team and to all the chefs working hard in the kitchen.

It was such a rewarding experience. We loved putting a smile on people’s faces and hearing their stories while giving them a hot meal. We look forward to coming back to help out again soon. We encourage other organisations to get involved and make a difference by corporate volunteering.
